Ethiopia

Air turns blue

The opposition Semayawi ('Blue') Party has fiercely attacked the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia for disallowing 24 of its South Omo candidates from standing in the 24 May general elections. Party leaders said the NEBE is arbitrarily cancelling candidacies. Nobody expects the opposition to make much impression on the majority of the long ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front but there is interest in how the EPRDF attempts to maintain the appearance of liberal democracy, an increasingly difficult task (AC Vol 56 No 1).
