Confusion abounds about General Sani Abacha's political intentions. Following an interview with the Washington Times in which Abacha said his possible candidacy in the 1998 presidential elections would depend on his constituency (the army), his Press Secretary David Attah said Nigerians should show 'true patriotism' by appealing to Gen. Abacha to contest the seat. Within a week of Attah's statement, full-page advertisements – paid for by 'patriotic Nigerians' – appeared in various newspapers, naming hundreds of members of Abacha for President Committees around the country.
