The United States' killing of Aden Hashi Ayro weakens Al Shabaab
and its mentor Sheikh Aweys
Before dawn on 1 May, two United States' AC130 gunships from Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti destroyed a house in Dusamareb, central Somalia, not far from the Ethiopian border. It was the fifth US attempt to take out terrorist targets in Somalia (AC Vol 49 No 6) and this time it worked, killing Aden Hashi 'Ayro', overall military commander of the Islamist group Al Shabaab (the Youth). Also killed were Sheikh Muhidin Mohamed Omar, half a dozen senior Al Shabaab commanders and Ayro's brother. His wife and children, and people from nearby houses, were also reported dead.
