After an earthquake and tsunami devastated its eastern coastline and caused meltdowns at the Fukushima reactors in March 2011, Japan shut down all but two of its nuclear power plants. Isao Matsumiya, the new State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, has been a vocal supporter of restarting the idling reactors but he travelled to Mozambique and South Africa in late October, as part of a plan to diversify Japan’s energy supplies.
