Private companies under the radar

Official Chinese statistics vastly underestimate the number and value of private Chinese investments in Africa, according to a recent World Bank report. Private Chinese Investment in Africa: Myths and Realities by Shen Xiaofang finds that official statistics from China’s Commerce Ministry claimed that private investors accounted for 923 or 55% of China’s 1,586 investment projects in sub-Saharan Africa in 2011. However, cross-referencing the data with statistics from investment authorities in the six African countries he surveyed, Shen shows that China’s official estimates are two to seven times lower than the levels reported by African governments.
