ANC looks in the mirror

Losing over a third of its members under Jacob Zuma's presidency, the ANC is getting nervous about next year's local elections

It may have ended with a stirring rendition of the liberation struggle song Mhla Sibuyayo (The Day We Return) led by President Jacob Zuma but the governing African National Congress's three-day policy meeting had to con- front some harsh truths about the ANC's standing in the country and the rival- ries in its ranks. That was even before the more policy-minded cadres tried to raise questions about the latest doom-laden forecasts of falling economic growth and rising unemployment.
