Grace plots for power

A cabal is backing President Mugabe's wife to replace Mnangagwa as Vice-President at the ruling party's congress next month

A dramatic bid, backed by President Robert Mugabe, to evict Emmerson Mnangagwa as one of the country's two vice-presidents, is set to dominate the national congress of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front next month. The plan is for First Lady Grace Mugabe née e Marufu to replace Mnangagwa and so position herself as her husband's likeliest successor, ZANU-PF insiders told Africa Confidential. However, Mnangagwa's allies, who include some leading military and intelligence officers, are unlikely to concede without a fight.
