Ex-ally vs Sassou

President Denis Sassou-Nguesso's decision to bring forward the presidential election date by three months to 20 March prompted General Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko to declare himself a candidate. Less than three weeks later, on 22 February, the man who was armed forces Chief of Staff in 1987-93 was arrested and questioned for six hours before being released. Mokoko had been a Special Advisor to Sassou and his representative as a mediator in the Central African Republic conflict.
