A very old connection

Portugal and Africa go back a very long way and in Lisbon they plan for rejuvenation

The new Portuguese President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso, knows Africa well. He is expected to increase pressure on institutions like the African Union and Southern African Development Community (SADC) to improve governance, provide sustainable economic development and raise living standards for all Africans, not just for rich elites. Portugal wants European Union development funds directed towards practical support for the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NePAD).
