Sliding into autocracy

President Magufuli is stifling liberties but investment confidence is crashing and resource nationalism is yielding few benefits

Since entering office a little over three years ago, President John Pombe Magufuli has focused on domestic affairs. Despite the approach of the 2020 general election, he will pay greater heed to international relations in 2019. Western engagement will become increasingly uncoordinated as individual countries balance their commercial and strategic interests against anxieties about continuing repression of dissenting voices, a worsening investment climate and threats to security. This last concern will force Tanzania to become more deeply engaged with its East African neighbours.
