Breaking the democratic line

As he blurs state finances with private business, President Talon is shredding his country’s reputation for political reform

Most of the big opposition parties boycotted the political dialogue called by President Patrice Talon on 7 October to defuse the crisis triggered by his exclusion of some of the country's most prominent politicians from the parliamentary elections in April. In the middle of a region struggling with deepening economic woes and security threats, Talon's government is fiercely protecting the President's commercial interests while cracking down on dissent.
