With the installation of his son Noureddin Bongo-Valentin as the 'general coordinator of presidential affairs', recuperating stroke victim President Ali Bongo Ondimba – or those acting for him – has reasserted the Bongo clan's hold on power. Whether or not the ground is being prepared for a quasi-dynastic succession – as opposition and media critics claim – the appointment has put decision-making firmly back in the hands of the Bongo family.
