Pandemic pricing

Civic activists and opposition politicians are pressing President Nana Dankwa Akufo-Addo's government on its response to the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly the lack of accountability around procurement. The government was on the back foot again following reports that the Ministry of Health had entered into an agreement with Sheikh Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum from the ruling family in the United Arab Emirates to purchase 300,000 vials of Russia's Sputnik V vaccine at US$19 a piece, when the government–to–government price is just $10 ex-factory (and that is over three-times the ex-factory price of the AstraZeneca vaccines). The Ministry in Accra issued a detailed rebuttal claiming it had exhausted all efforts to engage with the Russian government, and had no option but to pursue the Dubai route.
