Free voting, united opposition... Surely some mistake?

An opposition landslide?... An effective and impartial electoral commission?... President Daniel arap Moi praises his opposition successor then leaves the stage quietly?... If such an outcome had been suggested a year ago, most Kenyans would have responded 'Dream on!' Even on voting day on 27 December, surprised by the relatively low pre-poll violence and intimidation, many people feared that votes for the opposition National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) might be switched to those for the long ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU).
