Sata rises in the west

The electoral fortunes of Michael Sata are improving, in what has become a two-horse presidential race. The conventional wisdom had been that Sata could not defeat President Rupiah Banda unless he was the joint nominee of his Patriotic Front (PF) and the United Party for National Development. ‘If elections were held today, the President would definitely lose,’ an intelligence officer told Africa Confidential. He claimed recent polling put Sata some 3 percentage points ahead of Banda; others question that.
