Senior army officers are falling out over a succession plan which favours President Museveni’s son, Brigadier Kainerugaba Muhoozi

The raid by armed police on the Daily Monitor offices in Kampala on 20 May has deepened the political crisis. The newspaper had published a private letter from a dissident military officer about claims that President Yoweri Museveni’s government planned to assassinate its opponents. At the centre of the crisis is the growing belief among politicians that Museveni wants to install his son, Brigadier Kainerugaba Muhoozi, as the country’s next president. Museveni’s final term in office, after three decades in power, ends in 2016.
