Calls are growing for Graça Machel to stand for president. To many of her fellow Mozambicans, the idea is both appealing and logical. Her husband, Nelson Mandela, has just died and the governing Frente de Libertação de Moçambique is struggling for legitimacy in the wake of a major upset in the recent local polls. Frelimo’s selection of a presidential candidate for next October’s election is also long overdue.
