Lines in the sand

The Sierra Leone imbroglio casts more light on the web of security companies and mining houses associated with Sandline International and Executive Outcomes. It has focused attention on the usually publicity-shy businessman and yachtsman Anthony Buckingham who advises Sandline; and on 10 March it precipitated an investigation by British Customs & Excise into the operations of Sandline (registered in the British Virgin Islands) and its affiliates. We hear that subsequently considerable pressure, inside and outside government, has been brought to bear on Customs to drop the investigation quietly.
