Making room for friends

London-listed Madagascar Oil’s battles with the Malagasy government are heating up. The two sides are now heading for international arbitration. The dispute arose when the Haute Autorité de la Transition (HAT) government began looking for oil and mining properties to award to the Madagascar Development Corporation, its joint-venture holding company with the China International Fund (CIF) and China Sonangol. Transitional Prime Minister Camille Vital met Madagascar Oil executives on 7 May at the Salon des Mines et des Hydrocarbures (sponsored in part by China Sonangol) and cryptically told them that there are no problems without solutions.
