An agribusiness company’s projects across the country are facing opposition from local people and civil society groups

Singapore’s Olam is riding a new wave of opposition to its industrial agriculture and fertiliser projects. Criticism of state-backed projects from inside the governing Parti Démocratique Gabonais is rare and not usually tolerated. In 2010, the PDG tried to expel two members of parliament who refused to rubber-stamp constitutional changes to strengthen the presidency. That makes the public attacks on a rubber planation project by Bertrand Zibi Abeghé, the PDG MP from Haut-Ntem, in early June all the more uncharacteristic.
