Khama talks tough

Chinese construction companies may lose out on future government contracts after problems at the Morupule B power plant

In the last few years, Chinese builders have won contracts for more than 18 government-funded infrastructure projects for roads, stadiums‚ schools‚ hospitals‚ airports and public buildings in Botswana. Their easy ride may be at an end. In a 20 February interview, President Ian Khama told South Africa’s Business Day: ‘You know‚ we have had some bad experiences with Chinese companies in this country… We are going to be looking very carefully at any company that originates from China in providing construction services of any nature.We have started really tightening up on the way Chinese companies deliver on government contracts.
