The fight moves south

Riek may have got his old job back but there is still no new government and conflict has shifted southwards

Under threat of sanctions, President Salva Kiir Mayardit reappointed his old rival, Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon, as First Vice-President on 11 February but the two sides are still far apart on substantive issues and other appointments. The Transitional Government of National Unity agreed in August's peace deal is yet to be formed. Despite the ceasefire, fighting has spread in Western Equatoria, parts of Bahr el Ghazal and elsewhere, including Cueibet County.
