Veteran candidate Ssemogerere may make the presidential election a close-run affair

There is a growing feeling in Kampala that Yoweri Museveni, President of Uganda and of the ruling National Resistance Movement, will win this year's election only by an embarrassingly narrow margin. After ten years in power – which makes him the longest-serving Ugandan President – his popularity is shrinking. He has insisted that, although political parties are not illegal, the election will be on a 'no-party' basis. His main challenger, Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere of the Democratic Party, is a veteran party politician.
