Killing overshadows talks

The murder of Jeremias Pondeca on 8 October is widely seen as an act of desperation by recalcitrant, old-guard members of the governing Frente de Libertação de Moçambique. He was a senior member of the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana and in the peace talks with Frelimo. The latest in a series of death-squad-style assassinations, which practically all Maputo attributes to members of the secret services, it is also being interpreted as an effort to distract the population from the country's dire economic condition.
