The military has a good war

It is becoming clear that far from having lost out in the transition to majority rule the military establishment has benefited from it. The senior ranks are at least as powerful as they were under Frederik de Klerk's government and hide seems likely to change this for the life of the power sharing arrangements under President Nelson Mandela. Just how powerful the military remains was brought home to African National Congress supporters by the announcement that 10,600 million rand would be earmarked for defence spending this year more than four times the R2,500 mn. allocated to the Reconstruction and Development programme which is central to ANC policy.
