South Sudan

Storm over $10,000 permit

The United Nations warns that famine in South Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen is the greatest humanitarian challenge since the Second World War. So President Salva Kiir Mayardit's government's decision to raise work permit fees for senior foreign staff from US$100 to $10,000 a year has caused outrage among non-governmental organisations and accusations of profiteering.
