Court in the cross-fire

The country's most senior judges are under assault from commentators who suspect them of siding with the government

The Constitutional Court faces harsh criticism for a perceived bias towards President Edgar Lungu and for reversing its decisions after he and members of the governing Patriotic Front challenged them. In August and September last year, after strong criticism by the PF, the court twice reversed its opinion on the petition against Lungu's election brought by the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND). In the run-up to last year's polls, the ConCourt ruled that Lungu had violated the constitution by keeping his ministers in office after Parliament had been dissolved. Now, it is revisiting that decision after disapproving comments by Lungu. Critics say such revisions of decisions have been made only in cases that went against the PF or the executive.
