Shaky start for Sahel force

An attack on the G5 Sahel’s HQ has further undermined confidence in an alliance of governments who lack trust in each other

A lack of confidence and cash is holding up deployment of the G5 Sahel joint military force, tasked with tackling jihadist groups and trafficking gangs in the fragile border areas across the region. Much of the €414 million pledged at a February meeting in Brussels remains undisbursed because the donors are not convinced that the command and the force are up to the job.
