The effect of thwarting Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential ambitions could be the return of a de facto single-party state

The disintegration of the ruling Jubilee Party continues apace. In the clearest indications yet that President Uhuru Kenyatta is determined to remove the succession from his deputy, William Ruto, State House has moved to purge the party's leadership of Ruto allies in the Senate. The lower chamber will soon follow. It's simultaneously formalising coalition arrangements with its pre-election partner, the Kenya African National Union (KANU), and sending out signals that it is intent on bolstering its informal alliance with Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). It is also scouring the opposition's already depleted ranks in quest of other partnerships.
