President Laurent Gbagbo is heading for another showdown with France. He is rebuilding his modest airforce, bombed to cinders by French jets on 6 November after loyalist forces had bombed the French base at Bouaké (AC Vol 45 No 24). The terms for the return of the aircraft from Yamoussoukro to Abidjan have created new tensions with the French troops of Opération Licorne and the United Nations force they support.
