HYPREP's no-shows

Ogoni activists say most of the companies contracted by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) to carry out remediation work on disastrously polluted Ogoniland have not turned up on site over a year after contract award. The clean-up programme is mired in accusations of delay and procurement fraud, as reported in Africa Confidential . Probel Williams of the Ogoni People's Assembly has claimed only 2% of the 39 companies contracted in late April 2023 have started work, and the rest have only collected their 30% contract advances. He has referred 29 of the companies to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
