Paper tigers

A grudge match between Zimbabwe 's leading newspapers could further weaken independent journalism. The weekly Zimbabwe Independent claims the government's Central Intelligence Organisation wholly owns the Financial Gazette, plus 70 per cent of the Mirror group, founded and run by Ibbo Mandaza. According to the Independent, the CIO bought the Financial Gazette in 2002 after negotiations involving the present Central Bank Governor, Gideon Gono, then Chief Executive of the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe.
