The ruling party, ahead of its national congress, denies corruption by those seeking to lead it

The ruling New Patriotic Party, with its national congress due on 17 December, is torn by claims of financial abuses by its Chairman, Haruna Esseku (AC Vol 46 Nos 12 & 19). The private Enquirer newspaper secretly taped his conversations with the NPP's national organiser, Lord Commey, in which they allegedly claimed that the Castle, the seat of the Presidency, had hijacked party 'contributions' from companies which had won government contracts. Esseku and Commey claim the reporters maliciously misinterpreted their remarks, which doesn't stop private radio stations hotly debating the allegations.
