Old unions, new ANC

The public servants' challenge to President Thabo Mbeki's government involves over twelve unions with 800,000 members from all races and all shades of political opinion. Three constituent unions from the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) lead the push for militant action in support of civil service wage demands. They are Nehawu (National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union), Popcru (Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union) and Sadtu (SA Democratic Teachers' Union).
