The debate over exiles having the right to vote combines with
power-cuts to bring the opposition out on the streets
The main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress, has threatened to reject the results of the December 2008 elections if Ghanaians living abroad are allowed to vote. NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as 'General Mosquito', walked out of a 17 May meeting called by the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairman, Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, to solicit the views of the parties in parliament on guidelines for the controversial Representation of the People Amendment Law (ROPAL). The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) had rushed ROPAL through in 2005, provoking street protests and an NDC boycott of parliament.
