Inscrutable Khama

Vice-President Lieutenant General Ian Khama Seretse Khama, who is to take over as head of state within weeks, is a remarkably secretive politician. Even outgoing President Festus Mogae, who appointed Khama as his deputy five years ago, says he knows little about his successor's leadership style. At the time, veterans from the governing Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), Minerals Minister Ponatshego Kedikilwe and Public Service Minister Daniel Kwelagobe, opposed Khama's elevation. Commenators in Gaborone make homophobic insinuations about Khama being the 'first bachelor' to sit in State House.
