Inkatha has stopped the ANC's efforts to change the election rules
Inkatha, the only party strong enough to face up to the governing African National Congress, won a tactical victory this month in its home province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). By teaming up with smaller opposition parties, it scuppered ANC attempts to gain control of the province by changing the rules on party defectors (AC Vol 43 No 15). This a setback for President Thabo Mbeki and his friend, the ANC leader in KZN, S'bu Ndebele, and could encourage the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader, Mangosuthu 'Gatsha' Buthelezi, to lead a broader opposition coalition against the ANC just 15 months before the national elections.
