Malnourished children are dying in the countryside and the next harvest is unlikely to be better. The combination of the worst drought for a decade and bad government policies, along with the lack of seeds and fertiliser, is proving disastrous. Last week, the World Bank and International Monetary Fund refused to accredit a Zimbabwean delegation to their annual meetings in Washington. Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front and Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change(MDC) were supposed to have agreed a power-sharing cabinet and to start renewing relations with the international finance institutions. The impasse continues.
