Who's who in the standoff

Marc Ravalomanana, 'the Yoghurt King', built his Tiko business group from a hawker's cart into the country's biggest home-grown company (AC Vol 46 No 20). In 1999, he captured Antananarivo Town Hall, the launch-pad for his 2001-02 bid for the presidency. A highland Merina and a senior figure in the Protestant Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar, he has more support from rural chiefs than from the coastal populations.
