Jacob Zuma's legal problems are the new opposition's strongest card

The presidential election will make or break the careers of many South African political leaders. A new one has unexpectedly appeared. The new Congress of the People (COPE), formed mainly by dissidents from the governing African National Congress, has selected as its candidate Reverend Mvume Dandala. He was formerly Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa and is a close ally of ex-President Thabo Mbeki (AC Vol 50 No 3).
