Sudan

Khartoum fights back

President Omer Hassan Ahmed el Beshir made a long and inflammatory speech at a 16 March ceremony in Khartoum's Green Square. The Sudan Armed Forces, security, militia and police swore an oath of allegiance to him as 'Commander of the mujahideen and the protector of the religious standard'. No foreign aid agency would, 'God willing', be working in Sudan 'in one year's time', he declared. They could leave their relief aid 'at the ports'. Western aid agencies will hesitate to return.
