Army officers fear prosecution for their role in the violence of last year's elections

Security officers still gaol human rights activists. Jestina Mukoko, Director of the Zimbabwe Peace Project, was re-arrested on insurrection charges on 4 May, along with 14 other activists, and granted bail on 6 May. In December, she had been arrested by 17 armed men from the Central Intelligence Organisation. Officials of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) say the CIO coordinated the arrests with army intelligence. That would implicate senior security officials, including CIO boss Happyton Bonyongwe, and the commanders of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, the army, and the air force - General Constantine Chiwenga, Lieutenant Gen. Philip Sibanda and Air Marshal Perence Shiri.
