Football fuss

Algeria and Egypt stopped just short of war over qualification for the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa. We hear that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika had considered a special forces intervention if Algeria lost a group play-off match to decide Africa's last qualifier in Khartoum, Sudan. Not only was blood spilt by players and fans, Algerian and Egyptian communities have been threatened in each other's countries; embassies, airline offices and other national symbols have been attacked, envoys recalled and businesses threatened.
