The mounting pressure on Bethuel Kiplagat, the Chairman of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission, after the resignation of its deputy head Betty Murungi on 29 March, raises new doubts about the TJRC's future. In a column with Commissioner Ronald Slye (from the United States) in the Sunday Nation of 28 March, Murungi called for Kiplagat's resignation. Murungi and Slye said Kiplagat's position had been undermined by the Ndungu Report's claims about his acquisition of land, claims about his links to and knowledge of the Wagalla massacre in North East Province, and criticisms of his testimony to several commissions probing the assassination of Foreign Minister Robert Ouko (under whom Kiplagat served as Permanent Secretary).
