The thwarted contenders

Muslim Brotherhood (MB, El Akhwan el Muslimoon): The MB remains the main opposition party despite continual crackdowns and waves of arrests by the intelligence services. It also suffers from internal dissension since the election as leader of Mohamed Badie, who has favoured a non-violent, conciliatory approach to political reform. A dissident group broke off after the decision to contest the elections (AC Vol 51 No 21).
