Getting ready to vote

But when? President Mugabe wants a delay, his opponents want a road map and SADC does very little about it

Zimbabweans will have a chance to vote at least once this year. First will come a constitutional referendum, then – if President Robert Mugabe and his allies have their way – general elections soon afterwards. Recent discussions among rival parties and regional officials have thrown doubt on those plans, because there may not be time to prepare credible polls. Politicians are closely watching developments in Côte d’Ivoire where Laurent Gbagbo, insisting he is still President, is up against regional groups and the United Nations, who say he lost the recent election and must step down.
