Tough questions for Condé

The suppression of an opposition rally and concerns about the anti-corruption team raise doubts about Condé’s commitment to reform

President Alpha Condé averted the risk of opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo receiving a massive welcome on his return to Conakry on 3 April by the simple expedient of banning demonstrations. Condé defeated Diallo in the presidential election last November. Masses of supporters had greeted Condé when, as opposition leader, he arrived home a year ago this month. It does not augur well for democracy that Condé denied the same right to Diallo, leader of the Union des forces démocratiques de Guinée (UFDG). The new Governor of Conakry, Sékou Resco Camara (who is said to be not very literate), announced the ban on state television on the evening before Diallo’s arrival.
