Taking the democratic out of DRC

President Joseph Kabila and his supporters will restrict democratic representation only to the rich, if a bill sponsored by Kabila-stalwart Evariste Boshab goes through. The law will double the non-refundable deposit for presidential candidates from US$50,000 to $100,000. Deposits for candidates for the National Assembly will rise to $5,000, and to $2,500 for provincial parliamentary hopefuls. Other restrictions are on the table. The draft bill also proposes to eliminate the possibility of individuals standing as independents, except in 61 seats where the constituency will return only one MP.
