Algeria's growing military machine

Algeria's progress against the Islamist underground was confirmed by the killing last month of Antar Zouabri, the leader of the Groupe Islamique Armé. This was a coup for the ambitious commander of the First Military Region, General Fodil Cherif, and for the army's new equipment. Nevertheless, some recent arms purchases suggest that the military clique behind President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has wider aims than defeating the GIA and Hassan Hattab's Salafist Group for Call and Combat (GSPC).
