This time - at dawn on 22 September - mutinous soldiers of the Lesotho Defence Force faced well equipped South African troops, rather than just their own loyalist colleagues. Pretoria’s intervention, under the aegis of the South African Development Community, followed the mutineers’ arrest of 22 of their senior colleagues on 11 September. They had then forced their commander, Lieutenant General Makhula Mosakeng, to broadcast his resignation over Radio Lesotho. The trouble had begun with the dismissal of a colonel, accused of sympathising with demonstrators against the election results; many junior officers opposed his dismissal.
